It's standing room only at Spectra and Bewator Seminar

Hands-free technology was proven to be a real option for the future of access control at a recent seminar, jointly hosted by Spectra Security and Bewator Cotag at the Reebok Stadium.

Delegates from council and hospitals all over the North West were on hand to hear the new implications for security and access to their buildings, due to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which comes fully into force in October 2004. "Worthwhile and informative" was how Ian Gander from the Estates Department of Bolton School described the event, which covered the downfalls of current security systems as well as the advantages of the hands free system.

"Although this technology has been around for the best part of 20 years, it still represents the best access to any building for a disabled person" commented Phil Redcliffe, Bewator's technical manager. Over 15% of Britain's population are registered disabled, and with visual impairment and upper body mobility both as much of an issue as an
actual wheelchair user, traditional pin code and swipe card systems are now considered to be inaccessible and discriminatory.

Generating more litigation than either the sexual or racial discrimination acts, the DDA is a law which must be taken seriously. Buildings and doors must be adapted to allow full access for all. "The latest biometric technology is highly secure but systems requiring fingerprints or retinal scans can prevent substantial obstacles for disabled users" Mr Redcliffe warned.
The seminar, in addition to promoting the use of hands free equipment, provided a forum for local authority and healthcare representatives to meet and exchange information and ideas. "I've found this morning to be topical and have collected lots of useful information" Barry McGuinness of Manchester City Council commented, while Dave Wallace of Cegelec Plc expressed his satisfaction at the "simple, well-explained presentation."

Bolton based Spectra Security, the hosts of today's seminar, provide advice on and install door entry systems in and around the North West. Operations Director Barry Sloan summed up the event: "We are really pleased to have organised such an informative and also interesting gathering. The DDA is all about ensuring access for all, and today I believe we are well on the road to achieving that objective."
